“Are we sure about this?” Millie asked from the back seat of Constance’s old beat-up car.

“We haven’t done anything yet. We can take you home,” Ellie offered.

“Then what?” Millie shook her head. “I field questions all night about why I ditched you guys? I’ll eventually break, then both of you will be in trouble. Hell, all three of us will be in trouble because I didn’t tell him what was going on right away, and we all have to sit tenderly tomorrow.” She shook her head. “No, thank you. I’ll stay here. Less chance of getting in trouble here.”

“Wow.” Constance looked at her. “You’ve put a lot of thought into this.”

“It’s how my brain works.” Millie shrugged. “Can we go over the plan one more time?”

“There isn’t really a plan. We’re going to see what he’s like.” Ellie nodded at the house. “He’s a judge. I don’t doubt he has skeletons in his closet, and I want to know how big they are.”

“And if we’re caught?” Millie nibbled on her lip.

“How are we going to be caught?” Ellie asked. “We’re not breaking and entering, just following him around town, seeing how he treats people. Observing from a far.”

“Shit!” Constance sank in her seat when the dark sedan pulled out of the driveway.

“What are you doing?” Ellie asked, pulling her cousin up in her seat. “If you slouch in your seat like that every time he drives by us, you’re going to draw way more attention to us than we want. Sit up.”

Millie let her head fall to the back of her seat.

“Well, I guess we’re not backing out now.”
